The Technology - ePaper
What is ePaper?
Electronic paper (ePaper) is a display technology designed to mimic traditional ink on paper. Unlike LED or LCD screens, ePaper displays don’t emit light. Instead, ePaper reflects ambient light, which makes it easier on the eyes—especially in bright environments.
How ePaper Works
ePaper uses electrophoretic technology. It relies on tiny microcapsules suspended in a liquid layer. Each capsule contains black and white particles with opposite electrical charges.
When an electric field is applied, the particles move. A positive charge pulls the black (negatively charged) particles to the surface, making that spot appear dark. A negative charge does the opposite, bringing white particles to the top.
These microcapsules are arranged into pixels. This allows for precise control over what appears on the screen, from text to images.
Color ePaper
Color ePaper builds on the same idea. It adds extra layers of microcapsules, each with particles of different colors. Technologies like E Ink Spectra use this setup to display multiple colors per pixel.
Benefits of ePaper
ePaper displays reflect light just like printed paper. This removes the need for backlighting, which helps reduce eye strain and power consumption. They only use power when the content changes, making them ideal for devices like eReaders or digital signage.
One Standout Feature
One unique feature of ePaper is that it can “freeze” the display when turned off. Once the screen shows an image, it can stay visible without any power. You can unplug the display, and the content will remain until you plug it back in.
